The Military Family Research Institute (MFRI) at Purdue University added a new data indicator to Measuring Communities’ K-12 Education domain: Purple Star Schools.

Across the nation, K-12 schools are becoming increasingly more aware of military-related challenges for children, in large part due to the spread of the Purple Star School program led by the national advocate: the Military Child Education Coalition.

The Purple Star School Program is an initiative that supports military-connected children as they transition or relocate to a new school because of a parent's duty change. As of November 2022, 37 out of the 50 U.S. states have at least one Purple Star Designated School, according to the Military Child Education. You can search out the specific schools with this designation (including the school name, city, and state) by navigating to the K-12 Education domain topic. Currently, Measuring Communities is the only tool with this detailed list in one place, as MFRI’s data scientist has meticulously mined this information from countless school district websites across the country.
